PA for the Week of 1-30

Project Arrow testing will continue next week at Brookdale.  Our schedule is posted here, just scroll down.

3PA will again only meet on Friday of this week to continue our exploration of the pyramids of Egypt.  Why they were constructed, how they were constructed, and their significance will all be discussed.

4PA will have a full week next week, meeting every day.  We are going to begin our neuroscience unit on Monday with a PBS documentary titled "How Does the Brain Work" that will introduce neurology in the coolest way!  Magicians Penn and Teller use magic to show how the brain can be tricked into seeing one thing and believing another, we will explore artificial intelligence, and how magnetic wands can be used to control the brain.  It's a great way to get the class excited about this new learning.  Later in the week, we will begin to research the structure and function of specific parts of the brain using an online interactive map of the human brain. I have the site linked under the "student resources" section of the website. Once our research is complete, the kids are all going to create a model of the human brain that will also be a hat.  Here is an example, but the ones the PA students will have are all going to be blank and filled in using their own research.

5PA will be in class on Monday and Tuesday working on their Capstone projects and having a Capstone conference with me to review progress, set goals, and help focus each student's work moving forward.

2017 Angie's Hope "Promposal"

Angie's Hope

When they were in third grade, two former students in my fifth grade class decided they could make a difference in the world.  Kyra and Angie began Angie's Hope www.AngiesHope.org to find a cure for SMA, spinal muscular atrophy, yet Angie lives every day with a contagious passion few people I have ever met possess. Last year she came to Brookdale to speak to the fifth graders after being named one of the top ten student volunteers in the nation. She's off to Stanford in the fall and this year is their 10th and final fundraiser that began in the May Watts neighborhood as a garage sale in 2007. Watch this MVHS video promo and, if you can, donate to Angie's Hope.

Limited Week of PA 1-23

Project Arrow identification testing begins next week and will necessitate schedule changes.  I will not be seeing any TD groups for the next two weeks.  3PA will only meet on 1-27 to continue our introduction to Ancient Egypt.

5PA will begin a new unit on autobiographies written by authors on Monday.  I will be seeing 5th graders all week.  The kids will all select an autobiography written by an author.  When they are done reading the autobiography, we will select a work of fiction written by the same author for an in depth look at how life experiences writer's have make their way into the books they write.  We will be working on our Capstone projects on Wednesday.

Special Tuesday...

Hello PA Families,
I hope you had a wonderful break! Before break I mentioned Mr. Schumann's Birthday was during our holiday break, Jan 6th.  I had thought it would be fun to celebrate the Tues we got back, but turns out he was involved in Kindergarten testing this whole week, so no regular classes.  Perhaps we can try to celebrate this coming Tues, Jan 17th with hand made cards, poems, stories or something from his list of favorites (which I can resend if you can't find).  And lets wear his favorite colors, grey & orange.

Thank you
Nicole  & Kristen, PA Coordinators

PA Testing

On Tuesday, I sent home all of the letters for Project Arrow testing via backpacks. Testing will begin on January 23rd.  All third and fourth graders who are currently in PA do not test again, but all current fifth grade students will be testing to qualify for middle school PA. Please send back the permission to test form included with the letters that the fifth graders brought home. Because of the testing, Talent Development will be cancelled for two weeks beginning on 1-23.

During testing, PA will have limited classes with me.  I will post the schedules for testing and when students will be coming to PA next week.

There are no tests given to any of our kindergarten or first graders.  PA identification begins in second grade.

Project Arrow and Talent Development for the Week of 1-17

Kindergarten Talent Development will be reading a book titled My Friends with me on Tuesday.  We will use this story to make a three ring Venn diagram comparing the story to two different friends the students have to show how the book and our own friends are unique and different.

First Grade Talent Development will be reading two short chapter books by Cynthia Rylant in the Henry and Mudge series to find similarities and differences between the situations the characters find themselves in.  What was the same about how Henry and Mudge acted in the first book compared to the second, and what was different about their actions?

Second Grade Talent Development will be presenting their natural disaster presentations on Thursday and Friday.  On Tuesday the kids will be practicing with their partners to prepare and get some tips on giving a successful presentation to a group.

Third Grade PA will begin our journey into Ancient Egypt this week with a documentary titled "Pyramid" based on a book we will be reading by David Macaulay by the same name.  The kids will be taking notes about what the pyramids symbolize, what they were used for, and how they were constructed.
Fourth Grade PA will be curating a virtual museum exhibit of art, music, and literature based on our look back at the Harlem Renaissance using CoSpaces.  I hope to have parents go for a tour at Open House.  Please download the free CoSpaces app on your smart phones so we can show you our work using Google cardboard.

Fifth Grade PA will be developing questions on the good and bad of GMO's based on our extensive research we did before the break for a multi-day Socratic seminar that will begin on Wednesday.

Welcome Back!

There will not be PA or TD this week.  I will be giving CBM tests to our kindergarten and first grade students all week. I hope that everyone had a wonderful winter break!
