PA and TD for the Week of 8-27

Kindergarten Talent Development small groups will not begin until the first week of October, but I will start working with our newest Bobcats on Monday. This week, I will be seeing each class in my room to begin an author study of Peter Reynolds.  Over the next two weeks, I will be reading four of his books to the kids. We will be using these books for a project later this month.
1st Grade Talent Development will also begin with a few whole class activities this week.  I will be meeting with all four first grade classes to share two picture books.  Please, Open This Book and Ted. These are fun and engaging stories that students love.  I'll be introducing myself to the kids and explaining what my job at Brookdale is all about during our 40 minutes together.


2nd Grade Talent Development will also begin with whole group activities this week. Our first week will be similar to first grade, just a few fun stories and introductions.  I will be sharing The Book With No Pictures and The Wreck of the Zephyr with all three second grade classes

3PA will begin our journey by discussing a reoccurring theme in the PA curriculum, change.  The kids will be exploring categories of change in order to develop some generalizations about change.  How do things change? What causes change? Are there different types of change? We will use these generalizations all year long, but will begin applying them to a short story by Cynthia Rylant titled "Shells." I have already shared all of the documents the kids will need to their Google Drives.  Please make sure to charge your Chrome Books up because we will be using them almost everyday in PA this year.

4PA is staring off the year with some poetry.  We will be using two poems to explore different literary elements that we will learn about during our first semester together.  The kids will be reading "Birdfoot's Grandpa" by Joe Bruchac and "Famous" by Naomi Shihab, both poems are already in their Google Drives.  Teams of students will be working to identify examples of different literary elements in the poems and working to pull out the theme of each piece.  We may have time to begin writing our own version of the poem "Famous" by the end of the week. 

5PA might be my favorite grade to start the year with because of the opening activity I have done the last five years. I will be sharing a very complex picture book that takes about three hours to read and dissect titled The Collector of Moments by Quint Buchholz.  Finding the theme will be the primary focus, and we will end the week with applying this theme to the work we will do in PA all year long.  You might hear the kids asking about why its not good to be a deaf horse and listening to the music coming from art...but I promise it will all make sense.  The documents the kids need are already in their Google Drives.
